Wayland Baptist turns away Stars

Macy leads OCU with 12 kills

Heather Watson generated 31 assists and four digs Friday.

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University dropped a 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 verdict to nationally-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Friday at the Hutcherson Center.
Kristen Macy, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., posted team highs with 12 kills and nine digs for OCU. The Stars went to 12-8, 4-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Wayland Baptist, ranked 24th in NAIA volleyball, moved to 10-9, 4-2 in the SAC.
OCU's Meghan Irwin, a senior from Arlington, Texas, produced 11 kills and nine digs, and Heather Watson, a junior from Edmond, Okla., accumulated 31 assists and four digs. Kelley Shiels, a senior from Edmond, Okla., supplied the Stars with nine digs and their only ace.
Shahala Hawkins provided Wayland Baptist with 22 kills. Hawkins entered the match with an NAIA-high 5.51 kills per set.
"It was a tough loss because we played really well on offense, but just literally couldn't get one stop on defense," OCU coach Kyle Steele said. "Their all-American killed us, but she is leading the country right now. In sets two and three, we had the matchup we wanted, but we just couldn't get a stop."
In the second set, Irwin and Watson had kills to give OCU a 7-4 lead. Wayland Baptist rallied as Irwin's kill gave the Stars their last lead of the set at 14-13.
In the third set, the Stars held a 7-4 edge after getting six consecutive points. Watson's kill put OCU up 21-20, but Hawkins answered with four kills to bring Wayland Baptist match point at 24-21. Irwin broke up Wayland's run with a kill, but Hawkins put away the match with another kill.
Oklahoma City stays in conference play in a 7 p.m. match Tuesday against St. Gregory's in Shawnee, Okla.
