USAO escapes OCU 71-70

Stars move to 6-4 in SAC play

CHICKASHA, Okla. - Oklahoma City University fell 71-70 to USAO Saturday at USAO Fieldhouse.
The Stars, now 10-7 overall and 6-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, got big buckets from Terry Johnson and R.J. McGhee down the stretch, but the Drovers took advantage of their opportunities at the free-throw line and held on for the one-point victory.
USAO got a quick six points from Jahseth Lloyd and started the game on an 11-2 run. A 2-point jumper from Shavon Scott gave the Drovers a 24-11 advantage at the 11:08 mark of the first half.
The Stars responded by going on a 15-0 run to take 26-24 lead with 5:08 left in the half. Dorion Gigger poured in seven points to spark the Stars' run.
The teams swapped buckets and the lead for the rest of the period. USAO scored the last six points of the half and took a 38-33 lead to the locker room at half time.
OCU's bench outscored the USAO second unit 12-2 in the first frame.
Dema Sane scored in the paint and McGhee hit from 3-point land to help cut the Drovers' lead to 40-39 early in the second half.
USAO clung to its lead until Johnson scored in the paint to cap a 7-0 OCU run and give the Stars a 62-61 lead with 5:26 to go.
After the Drovers rebuilt their lead to 68-64, McGhee hit a clutch 3-pointer with 29 seconds left to cut the USAO advantage to one point.
USAO converted 3-of-4 free-throw chances and forced an OCU turnover to escape with the 71-70 victory.
McGhee paced the Stars with 21 points and three rebounds and Johnson followed with 13 points and four rebounds. Gigger gave OCU a lift off the bench with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Stars will return to action against No. 1 Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 at Abe Lemons Arena.
