Southwestern Assemblies of God nips OCU 68-63

Second consecutive Stars upset bid comes up short

Jamaal Crayton netted 13 points to lead OCU against Southwestern Assemblies of God.

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University narrowly fell 68-63 to Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Monday at the Sheaffer Center.
The Stars, now 7-6 overall and 3-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, led the second-ranked Lions by as many as nine points, but SAGU scored 18 points off 21 turnovers and foiled OCU's upset bid.
OCU started the game on a 13-4 run and held a nine-point advantage at the 10:45 mark of the first half. 3-point buckets from Dorion Gigger and Kaleb Smith fueled the Stars' run.
The Lions responded by closing the half on a 24-10 run and took a 28-23 lead to the locker room at the half.
OCU shot just 33 percent from the floor in the first half, but held SAGU to 30 percent shooting from the field.
Dominique Rambo scored in the paint and stretched the Lions' lead to 10 at the 15:32 mark of the second half.
Buckets from Jamaal Crayton and Terry Johnson sparked a 13-5 run for the Stars and helped cut the SAGU lead to 42-40 with less than 10 minutes on the clock. 3-point jumpers from Crayton and Terence Bonhomme fueled the OCU run.
Smith buried a 3-pointer and Dema Sane followed with a free throw to bring the Stars all the way back and tie the score at 49-49 at the 6:07 mark.
After an R.J. McGhee 3-pointer cut the Lions' lead to 63-61, SAGU salted the game away at the charity stripe and took the 68-63 victory.
Crayton led the Stars attack with 13 points and five rebounds. Johnson followed with 12 points and four rebounds and Smith added 11 points and six boards.
The Stars will return to action against Oklahoma Baptist at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla.
