Stars face 2013 NAIA runner-up

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University hits the road to take on first-year Sooner Athletic Conference member and second-ranked Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas).

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU saw its upset bid come up short against No. 12 St. Gregory's 85-78 Saturday at W.P. Wood Field House in Shawnee, Okla. The loss moved the Stars to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in SAC play.
Forward R.J. McGhee led the Stars with 18 points and six rebounds against St. Gregory's. The 6-foot-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., has scored in double digits in three of the four games he has played in this season. McGhee is averaging 14 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this season.
Senior Terry Johnson also dropped 18 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds. The 6-foot guard from Chicago has scored 15 points or more in six of the Stars' last eight games. Johnson leads OCU with 17.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest.
Terrence Walker, a senior from Jonesboro, Ark., added 12 points on 60 percent shooting from the floor and five rebounds. The 6-foot-8 center leads the Stars in field goal percentage shooting 59 percent from the floor. Walker is averaging 11.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per outing.
OCU is ranked 10th in NAIA Division I in scoring defense per game (65.7) and 14th in blocks per game (3.75). To see how the Stars stack up against the rest of the NAIA, click here.
The Stars have been picked to finish fourth in the SAC in the preseason coaches' poll. OCU has won national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
OCU and Southwestern Assemblies of God will meet for the first time Monday.

ABOUT THE LIONS: No. 2 Southwestern Assemblies of God prevailed 80-71 against USAO at USAO Fieldhouse in Chickasha, Okla. The Lions improved to 12-1 and 5-0 with the win.
Dominique Rambo led the Lions with 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists against the Drovers. The 5-foot-10 guard is averaging 26.6 points through just five games this season.
Jonathan Walter added 19 points and seven boards in the win over USAO. The 6-foot-4 forward is averaging 17.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest.
Caleb Feemster followed with 13 points and five rebounds in the contest. The 6-foot-5 forward is averaging 14.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per outing for the Lions.
The Lions are ranked fifth in NAIA Division I in 3-point field goals made per game (9.6) and ninth in steals (11.5) and total rebounds (42.9) per game. Southwestern Assemblies of God has been slated to finish second in the SAC by league coaches.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a record of 36-30 in his third season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 23-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Donnie Bostwick enters his third season as head coach of the Lions. He owns a 60-16 record through his first two campaigns with Southwestern Assemblies of God. Bostwick led the Lions to the NAIA Division I Tournament title game a season ago.
