MSU-Northern ousts Stars from NWCA National Duals

OCU takes 28-12 win over 19th-ranked Midland

Zach Skates went 3-0 with two wins over ranked opponents Saturday.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Montana State-Northern eliminated Oklahoma City University from the NWCA National Duals with a 24-20 win Saturday at Hyvee Hall.
The Stars (5-6) had defeated Midland (Neb.) 28-12 after starting the day with a 34-6 loss to Grand View (Iowa), the top-ranked team in NAIA wrestling.
OCU led second-ranked Montana State-Northern 20-15 after Jared Bass collected a forfeit win at 184 pounds. Garrett DeMers, ranked sixth at 197, picked up a 7-3 win over OCU's Cody Sivertsen to cut OCU's lead to 20-18.
In the 285-pound match, Toby Cheff pinned Teagan Franco in 4:36 to complete Montana State-Northern's rally. Cheff is the fourth-ranked 197-pounder in the NAIA.
Two OCU wrestlers upended higher ranked Montana State-Northern individuals to give the Stars a 14-6 lead. At 149, Ricky McCarty overwhelmed Hunter Azure 14-0. McCarty, a freshman from Lawton, Okla., entered at No. 11 in the rankings, while Azure is ranked ninth.
OCU's Zach Skates, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., won 15-7 over Edward Cheff in a matchup of top five-ranked wrestlers at 157. Skates is No. 5, and Edward Cheff is third.
The Stars toppled 19th-ranked Midland 28-12 as Adrian Gaines and Derek Sivertsen notched falls. McCarty added a technical-fall victory.
Gaines, a freshman from Lawton, Okla., started OCU off with a fall in 3:38 at 125. Alvie Killingsworth put the Stars ahead 9-0 with a 14-2 victory over Skyler Goepfert at 133.
McCarty won 17-1 over Tyler Boyer at 149. Skates took a 15-7 victory over Joseph Winkler at 165. Derek Sivertsen's pin of Aaron Hovey came in 1:57 in the 184-pound bout.
Cody Sivertsen's 10-8 win over Connor Hovey provided the Stars a 28-9 cushion entered the final match of the dual.
Against Grand View, Skates edged Dallas Houchins 5-3 in the 157-pound match. Houchins is rated seventh among the NAIA's 157-pounders. Franco won 3-1 over Derrick Hawkins in Franco's debut in a dual this season.
OCU takes on Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Arkadelphia, Ark.
