Stars sweep two matches Wednesday

OCU edges Austin, pounds Texas College

Rachel Gabel recorded her seventh career double-double with 22 kills and 12 digs against Austin College on Wednesday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHERMAN, Texas – Oklahoma City University snagged victories over Austin (Texas) 24-26, 25-20, 25-16, 16-25, 15-4 and Texas College 25-13, 25-7, 25-14 on Wednesday at Hughey Gym.
The Stars gained their first win in a five-set match this year while notching their sixth three-set sweep of 2013. OCU moved to 8-4.
In the fifth set against Austin, OCU rolled to the match's final eight points. During that contest-clinching run, Rachel Gabel hammered three kills, including the kill that touched off the Stars' spree. Kristen Macy added two kills, plus the kill that finished the match.
"Austin College played really tough against us," OCU coach Nikki Dieball said. "When we needed to step up and make big plays in the fifth, we did. I'm proud that we finished so strong."
Gabel, a sophomore from Richardson, Texas, produced 22 kills and 12 digs, and Macy, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., notched her second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 26 digs for the Stars. Gabel's 22 kills surpassed the 19 she had against Southeastern (Fla.) on Aug. 30 for her single-match career high.
OCU's Heather Watson dished out a career-high 42 assists, while Danielle Robison picked up a season-high 26 digs to go with four aces. Meghan Irwin provided OCU with 12 kills and three blocks, and Tori Leisure pitched in 10 kills and two blocks.
The Stars kept Texas College winless behind a sizzling .348 hitting percentage. Leisure, a sophomore from Haslet, Texas, recorded seven kills and three blocks, while Macy had seven kills, five digs and two blocks. Irwin knocked down six kills, and Watson racked up 19 assists.
OCU faces Sooner Athletic Conference foe Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 11 a.m., then East Central at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. East Central takes on Wayland Baptist at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for all matches Saturday, while the first two will be broadcast live on video by visiting OCU's Stretch Internet portal.
