OCU falls 8-0 to No. 1 Concordia

Cotta throws two-hit shutout at Stars

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Oklahoma City University suffered an 8-0 setback to top-ranked Concordia (Calif.) on Monday at South Commons Softball Complex in the NAIA Championships.
Katie Cotta of Concordia limited OCU to two hits in six innings. The fourth-ranked Stars (51-14) take on second-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) in an elimination game noon CDT Tuesday.
Cotta struck out seven and walked one. Cotta improved to 25-2 and lowered her earned run average to 0.39. Jamie Rateliff (23-5) took the loss for the Stars.
Tori Joyner led off the game with an infield single for OCU. Cotta retired the next 13 Stars in order.
In the sixth inning, Shelbi Legg nailed a base hit past the shortstop. Joyner drew a walk to put two runners on. Legg made it to third base and Joyner to second before Cotta retired Drew Wright on a popout to end the inning.
Concordia's Hannah Howell broke the 0-0 deadlock by leading off the bottom of the third with a home run over the left-field fence. Jenna Jorgenson added an RBI single in the third.
Emily Craig of Concordia was hit by pitch with the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Annette Merjano followed with a grand slam to left.
Jorgenson finished up the scoring with an RBI base hit in the sixth.
OCU was shut out for the first time this season. The Stars entered the game leading the NAIA in hits, runs scored, doubles and RBIs.
