Stars rally past Cal State San Marcos 8-3

OCU stuns Cal State San Marcos with seven-run sixth inning

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Magean De La Torre's three-run home run keyed a seven-run uprising in the bottom of the sixth inning as Oklahoma City University pounded Cal State San Marcos 8-3 on Friday in the NAIA Championships at South Commons Softball Complex.
OCU (51-13) overcame a 3-0 deficit. The fourth-ranked Stars moved into a 3 p.m. CDT game Monday, while fifth-ranked Cal State San Marcos (43-11) plays an elimination game 9 a.m. Saturday.
De La Torre, a senior from Plano, Texas, launched a 1-2 pitch beyond the left-field fence with two on to put the Stars in front 5-3. Drew Wright socked an RBI double over the center fielder's head to slice OCU's deficit to 3-2.
Tori Joyner nailed a two-run single to left-center field to extend OCU's lead to 7-3. Wright picked up a bases-loaded walk to score another run. De La Torre flied out to center to finish the inning with the bases full.
Cal State San Marcos' Cortney Allen had retired seven OCU batters in a row entering the bottom of the sixth. Six Stars in a row reached base to begin the OCU half of the sixth.
LeeAnn Lopez ripped a double past the third baseman to drive in the Stars' first run of the game in the bottom of the third.
Caylyn Rodriguez's RBI base hit put Cal State San Marcos ahead 1-0 in the second. Patricia Banda knocked in a run on a second-inning single, and Sarah Quiambao scored on an error to give Cal State San Marcos a 3-0 advantage.
Lopez, a senior from Grand Prairie, Texas, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Jamie Rateliff, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-3 with a run scored. De La Torre hit her 10th homer of the year.
Shelbi Legg, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., scored twice, and Wright, a senior from Moore, Okla., was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
Danielle Fox notched the victory for OCU. Fox, a junior from Yukon, Okla., shut out Cal State San Marcos over the last four innings on three hits. Fox (2-1) struck out five.
Allen dropped to 34-6. Allen allowed eight runs on 10 hits and three walks in 5.1 innings. Allen had entered the game with a 0.91 earned run average.
