Gomez of OCU nabs fourth in NAIA Championships

Skates gets fifth at 165, Franco grabs seventh at 174

Kidd Gomez finished his OCU career with a 113-44 record.
DES MOINES, Iowa – Kidd Gomez of Oklahoma City University finished fourth place at 125 pounds, while Zach Skates picked up a fifth-place finish at 165 and Teagan Franco took seventh at 174 on Saturday in the NAIA wrestling championships at the Jacobson Exhibition Center.
All three finished as NAIA all-Americans for the ninth-ranked Stars. OCU scored 32.5 points to sit 13th place in the team standings.
Gomez, a senior from Noble, Okla., dealt Duell Stadel of Montana-State Northern a 16-3 loss to advance to the 125-pound third-place match. Gabe Roman of Missouri Baptist won the third-place bout 17-10. Two-time defending national champion Mitchell Lofstedt won by fall in 2:49 to move Gomez (37-11) into the consolation bracket.
In his OCU career, Gomez finished with a 113-44 record with 29 falls. He was a four-time national tournament qualifier, two-time NAIA Central Qualifying Group Tournament champion and winner of eight open tournaments as a Star.
Skates, a redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., edged Sterling Terry of Midland (Neb.) 3-2 to capture fifth place at 165. Skates defeated Brady Beamon of Simpson (Iowa) 8-5 before falling to Shawn Lau of Great Falls (Mont.) 1-0 to get to the fifth-place contest.
In his first season at OCU, Skates finished 39-13 and seventh among 165-pounders.
Franco, a junior from Spanaway, Wash., topped Zeke Hunt of Cumberland (Tenn.) 6-2 for seventh place at 174. Franco lost 3-0 to Parker Owen of Baker (Kan.) to go into the seventh-place match.
Franco finished 24-13 in 2012-13, bringing his OCU career record to 33-22.
