Stars pull out 77-72 win over John Brown

OCU takes SAC Tournament title, secures national-tournament berth

 
SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University overcame a frantic rally by fourth-ranked John Brown (Ark.), holding on for a 77-72 triumph Saturday at the Noble Complex in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament title game.
SAC Tournament most valuable player Charlton Jones, a senior from Katy, Texas, powered the Stars with 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. OCU captured its ninth SAC men's basketball tournament championship.
OCU has won the SAC Tournament crown in 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008 and now, 2013. The Stars seized the league's automatic bid into the NAIA Division I Tournament on March 13-19 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. Six-time national champion OCU will make its first NAIA Tournament appearance since 2010.
Pairings will be unveiled 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in an announcement show broadcast live over www.naia.org. Fans can see the program at the Leichter Room above Abe Lemons Arena.
Terry Johnson, a junior from Chicago, provided OCU with 17 points, and Troynell Adams, a senior from Chicago, posted 15 points and five rebounds for the Stars. Adams and Johnson were all-tournament choices, while Elhadji Wade, a senior from Dhakar, Senegal, became the tournament hustle award winner.
“Our guys fought hard until the end tonight,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “They knew they deserved to be in this game, and I couldn't have asked for more heart and effort out of our team. We have some great leaders in this group that really stepped up and took control of the game when we needed them the most.”
Jamil Donovan supplied the Stars with a 73-63 advantage with 54 seconds left by hitting a free throw. E.J. McWoods went off for seven points as John Brown went on a 9-1 tear. McWoods had two baskets and four free throws to key John Brown.
McWoods hit free throws with 24 seconds left that shrank OCU's lead to 74-70. After an OCU turnover, McWoods dropped in two more free throws with for a 74-72 OCU edge with 11 seconds left.
Adams nailed a free throw with 10 seconds left to push the Stars' lead to 75-72. Adams rebounded Abel Galliguez's 3-point miss from the left wing with two seconds showing. Adams sank two free throws to seal the victory.
The Stars took advantage of 15 John Brown turnovers to score 17 points. OCU gave up 11 turnovers, but John Brown scored two points off the Stars' miscues.
“Everyone played a part in this victory, and I couldn't be more proud,” Phelps said. “This team fought through some adversity during the season and has come together to play our best basketball at the right time. We are excited for the opportunity to keep playing.”
Johnson tallied seven points as OCU jumped out to an 11-3 lead 4:12 into the game. The Stars shot 53.3 percent from the field in the first half, hitting 16 of 30 shots.
Kaleb Smith canned a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 OCU run that put the Stars on top 57-35 with 15:01 left in the game. OCU built its largest advantage of the game.
John Brown answered with a 14-0 surge. Galliguez hit a trey to cap the run, making the score 57-49 with 9:16 remaining. McWoods' 3 cut John Brown's deficit to 61-56 with 5:33 to go. Adams pushed OCU's lead to 66-56 with a bucket at the 2:59 mark.
