OCU falls to fourth-ranked John Brown 66-62

Stars lead by two points with 2:23 remaining in contest

OKLAHOMA CITY – John Brown (Ark.) held off Oklahoma City University 66-62 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Terry Johnson, a junior from Chicago, topped the Stars with 15 points. John Brown, ranked fourth in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 22-4, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while OCU fell to 12-9, 5-8 in the SAC.
Terrence Walker dropped in a tip-in to give OCU a 59-57 edge with 2:23 to go in the contest. E.J. McWoods' free throws answered for John Brown with 1:29 left in the game.
Charlton Jones had free throws that cut John Brown's lead to one point twice – with 1:20 showing and with 36 seconds remaining. Johnson tried a 3-pointer with six seconds left that knocked off the back iron. Kurtis Phillips of John Brown cleared the rebound, and added a free throw to seal the outcome.
Kofi Josephs canned three 3-pointers as John Brown led 9-2 early. Kent High's trey put the Golden Eagles ahead 20-6 with 12:45 to go in the first half. It would be John Brown's largest lead of the game.
OCU climbed back into the game with a 9-0 run. Johnson completed a 4-point play with a trey and free throw with 10:06 showing to cut the Stars' deficit to 20-15. Kaleb Smith's breakaway layup off Walker's steal tied the game 24-24.
Elhadji Wade had a jumper and a dunk that helped OCU build a 30-26 advantage with 2:54 left in the first period.
OCU finished at 35 percent shooting from the field after posting a 52 percent field-percentage in the first half. The Stars held John Brown to 34.6 percent shooting.
Wade, a senior from Dhakar, Senegal, added 13 points and six rebounds, while Jones, a senior from Katy, Texas, had nine points, two rebounds and two assists for the Stars.
The Stars take on St. Gregory's at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at Abe Lemons Arena. It will be OCU's home season finale.
