OCU ousts Oklahoma Baptist 64-60

Stars advance to SAC Tournament semifinals 8 p.m. Friday

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University upended Oklahoma Baptist 64-60 on Thursday at the Noble Complex in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament quarterfinals.
Charlton Jones, a senior from Katy, Texas, posted 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals for OCU. The Stars (15-10) play 8 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. Eighth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist fell to 24-7.
OCU snapped a 12-game losing streak to Oklahoma Baptist. The Stars last beat OBU 88-60 on Feb. 14, 2008 at Abe Lemons Arena.
Oklahoma Baptist had eliminated OCU from the SAC Tournament quarters the past two years. OBU prevailed 90-85 in overtime in last year's tournament. OBU had won the past three games against the Stars by a combined 13 points.
All five OCU starters reached double digits in scoring Thursday. Terry Johnson, a junior from Chicago, picked up 11 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Kaleb Smith, a junior from Choctaw, Okla., added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Stars.
Troynell Adams and Terrence Walker each contributed 10 points for OCU. Walker, a junior from Jonesboro, Ark., keyed OCU's 17-7 start with five points in that span. Elhadji Wade's putback provided the Stars with their largest lead of the contest with a putback to give OCU a 17-7 lead with 13:00 left in the first half.
The lead changed hands 11 times in the tilt. Oklahoma Baptist rallied to hold a 31-29 edge as Clinton Houston had a lay-in with 22 seconds before halftime.
OCU scored the first five points of the second half as Jones cashed in a steal with a layup to put the Stars on top 34-31 with 18:07 left to go.
Chase Adams gave Oklahoma Baptist a 39-38 lead with a layup with 15:27 remaining. Jones answered with a layup with 15:04 showing to give OCU the lead for good.
With 27 seconds left, Johnson rebounded David Johnson's 3-point miss, then scored on a breakaway basket to create a 63-57 OCU lead.
The Stars limited their turnovers to five while Oklahoma Baptist had 15. OCU outscored OBU 18-1 in points off turnovers. OCU had a 38-26 advantage in points in the paint.
