Stars edge Rogers State 80-77

Charlton Jones hit the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to lift OCU

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University's Charlton Jones buried the game-winning 3-point jumper as time expired to give the Stars an 80-77 victory over Rogers State Saturday at the Claremore Expo Center.
Rogers State's Ken Holdman drove and scored with five seconds left on the clock to tie the score at 77-77. Jones took the inbounds pass from Kaleb Smith and took it across the timeline before hoisting the game-winner. OCU finished the regular season 14-10 overall and 7-9 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
“It is crazy to be in those situations, and if you remember we were on the other end of this when we played here last year,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “It was a good thing that the basketball gods were on our side tonight.”
The Stars have gone 2-3 over the years at the Claremore Expo Center, winning in their first and final trips to Claremore, Okla.
OCU started the game on a 10-2 run. Jones and Smith fueled the run with five points apiece to give OCU an eight point lead at the 16:51 mark of the first half.
Rogers State roared back with a 24-7 run to take a 26-17 lead with 8:26 remaining in the half.
The Hillcats shot a scorching 58 percent from the floor and 66 percent from behind the 3-point line and led by as many as 17 points in the first half.
Shawn Grant scored five points at the end of the half to help cut the Rogers State lead to 47-34 at halftime.
Troynell Adams hit a 3-point jumper at the 17:18 mark to spark a 13-2 OCU run. Terry Johnson capped the run with a 3-pointer to tie the score at 53-53 with 14:06 left on the clock.
Smith scored the Stars' next seven points to give OCU a five-point lead at the 9:49 mark.
The Stars and Hillcats traded buckets down the stretch in the second half. OCU led by four points with 25 seconds to go, but back-to-back buckets from Holdman tied the score at 77-77.
Jones responded with the game-winner and gave OCU the 80-77 victory.
Jones paced the Stars with a game-high 25 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the 3-point line, eight assists and six rebounds.  Smith followed with 14 points, Grant chipped in 11 points and Johnson added 10 points.
The Stars will return to action in the SAC Tournament on Feb. 27-March 2 at the Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla. OCU will likely enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed and take on tournament-host Oklahoma Baptist in the first round.
