Stars fall 72-61 to Midwestern State

OCU moves to 2-2 overall

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Oklahoma City University fell 72-61 to nationally-ranked Midwestern State (Texas) on Monday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Stars, now 2-2 on the season, led by as many as five points in the first half, but could not maintain the lead and fell to the sixth-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
Jamaal Crayton scored seven of OCU's first 11 points to jumpstart the offense in the first half.
Back-to-back buckets in the paint from Dorion Gigger and Terence Bonhomme sparked a 7-3 run for the Stars. Bonhomme buried a 3-point jumper at the 10:14 mark to stake OCU to a 20-16 advantage.
Crayton converted a pair of free throws at the 6:30 mark and gave the Stars their biggest lead of the first half at 28-23.
Midwestern State answered with three straight baskets and took a one-point advantage with just over three minutes remaining in the first frame.
The Mustangs finished the half on a 13-4 run, fueled by six points from Eddie D'Haiti, and took a 36-32 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Bonhomme and Crayton paced the Stars with nine points apiece in the first period. The Stars scored 11 points off eight turnovers and netted 16 points in the paint in the first half.
Midwestern State began the second half on a 10-0 run. Derek Kaster scored six points during the run and gave the Mustangs a 46-32 advantage with 16:29 left on the clock.
Bonhomme hit from 3-point range at the 15:38 mark and Crayton followed with a pair of free throws to keep the Stars within 10 points of the lead.
With 12:52 remaining, Dema Sane scored in the paint and started OCU on a 12-5 run. A layup from Terrence Walker and free throws from Kaleb Smith and Terry Johnson cut the Midwestern State lead to 53-50 with less than 10 minutes to play.
Midwestern State countered with another 10-0 run and built a 63-50 advantage with 5:23 left on the clock. Monzaigo Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers to key the run.
A layup from Walker cut the Mustangs' lead to single digits, but Midwestern State held the OCU offense at bay and took the 72-61 victory.
Bonhomme led OCU with a game-high 15 points. Crayton followed with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sane and Walker chipped in with eight points and three rebounds apiece.
Entering Monday's contest, OCU held a 17-1 advantage in the all-time series with Midwestern State. The Mustangs' last victory over the Stars came Feb. 24, 1994.
The Stars will return to action against former Sooner Athletic Conference rival Oklahoma Christian at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Central Oklahoma Classic at Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla.
