Stars rout Southwestern Christian

OCU gets sixth win in seven contests

Rachel Gabel notched eight kills, 11 digs and an ace Tuesday.
Box Score BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University hammered Southwestern Christian 25-16, 25-20, 25-13 on Tuesday at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
Rachel Gabel, Meghan Irwin and Kristen Macy shared team-high honors with eight kills each for the Stars. OCU moved to 15-8, 6-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
Gabel, Macy and Danielle Robison led OCU in digs with 11 each. Hannah Mitcham produced 17 assists and seven digs, while Heather Watson pitched in 15 assists and three digs for the Stars.
OCU's Tori Leisure nailed six kills, and Tori Thomas added four aces and three digs. The Stars netted nine aces against Southwestern Christian. OCU entered the match ranked 15th as a team in service aces per set among the NAIA.
In the first set, Mitcham's ace gave OCU a 24-16 advantage. The Stars erased a 3-0 deficit.
The Stars scored eight of the final nine points of the second set, overcoming a 19-17 hole. Irwin's consecutive kills tied the set 19-19. Gabel had an ace to cap a 4-0 OCU run and put the Stars ahead 21-19. Macy tacked on two kills, then Torrie Flynn pounded a kill to put away the set.
In the third set, OCU used an 8-0 spree to overcome an 8-7 Southwestern Christian edge. Leisure notched three kills, and Macy had two during the OCU run. Chazmin Franklin's kill provided OCU with match point, and Anna Gentry served up an ace to clinch the match.
The Stars face Wayland Baptist (Texas), ranked 18th in the NAIA, at 7 p.m. Friday in Plainview, Texas.
