OCU falls 66-61 to John Brown

Stars get 17 points from Johnson, Jones but succomb to Golden Eagles

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University narrowly fell 66-61 to John Brown (Ark.) Thursday at Bill George Arena.
The 22nd-ranked Stars struggled to score, only shooting 34 percent from the field, and moved to 7-2 on the season.
OCU and John Brown traded buckets early in the first half. The Stars got five points from Charlton Jones and four points from Terry Johnson, and the score was tied 9-9 with 12 minutes and 33 seconds remaining in the half.
Elhadji Wade scored in the paint at the 5:11 mark to snap a 15-4 run by John Brown. Johnson hit a pair of free throws and a jumper and Tim Morton added a jumper to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 21-26 at the half.
OCU held John Brown to 34 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point distance in the first half.
Jones got to the free throw line early in the second half and converted to cut the John Brown lead to three points. The Golden Eagles responded with an 11-4 run to push their lead to 37-27 with 16:16 to go.
Johnson and Wade hit back-to-back buckets to stop the John Brown run, but the Stars had trouble closing the gap and the Golden Eagles' lead ballooned back to 48-38 at the 10:59 mark.
John Brown scored three straight baskets to take a 13-point lead with 6:11 on the clock.
The Stars responded with a 16-7 run to cut the John Brown lead to 60-56 at the 1:11 mark. OCU got clutch 3-point buckets from Kaleb Smith and Jones to fuel the run.
Jones scored five points in the final minute of the game, but John Brown converted at the free throw line to take the 66-61 victory.
OCU forced 15 turnovers, but John Brown shot 47 percent from behind the 3-point line on the game.
Johnson and Jones each posted 17 points to lead the Stars. Johnson added four rebounds and three assists, and Jones added three steals. Wade followed with 10 points and five rebounds and Smith notched eight points and five boards.
OCU will return to action against USAO at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
