Mid-America Christian tops Stars 81-74

The loss drops OCU to 8-7 overall and 1-6 in SAC play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University suffered an 81-74 setback against Mid-America Christian Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars got 25 points from senior guard Terry Johnson but failed to pick up the win and move 8-7 on the season and 1-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Back-to-back 3-point jumpers from Charlie Shorter and Camilo Valencia put Mid-America Christian on top by nine points with 15 minutes and 32 seconds left the first half.
OCU responded with a 3-pointer from Troynell Adams and back-to-back buckets in the paint from Elhadji Wade to tie the score at 14-14 at the 13:28 mark. Charlton Jones converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and Adams threw down a transition dunk to cap the 12-0 run and give the Stars their first lead of the game.
The Stars led by as many as three points in a first half that featured nine lead changes and five ties.
Johnson slashed in the lane and scored with seven seconds left in the first period to tie the score at 35-35 at halftime.
OCU scored 12 points off 10 Evangel turnovers in the first half. The Stars scored 16 points in the paint but only shot 34 percent from the floor.
Johnson scored eight of OCU's first 10 points in the second half to stake the Stars to a 45-42 lead with 15:16 remaining in the contest.
With the score tied at 51-51, Shorter converted a four-point play to help the Evangels outscore the Stars 25-15 over the next 10 minutes. OCU allowed 10 second-chance points in the half and trailed 76-66 with 2:14 left on the clock.
Kaleb Smith and Jones provided six straight points in the paint to cut the Mid-America Christian lead to four points with 42 seconds to go, but the Evangels put the game away at the free throw line and escaped with the 81-74 victory.
Johnson led the OCU charge with 25 points in 34 minute of action. The senior from Chicago converted on 10-of-11 opportunities from the charity stripe.
Adams notched 18 points, six rebounds and four assists on the night. Jones followed with 17 points six assists and five rebounds and Wade grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Stars will return to action against St. Gregory's at 8 p.m. Thursday at W.P. Wood Field House in Shawnee, Okla.
