OCU's Gomez captures Missouri Valley Invitational title

Meyer pads Stars career record fall total

Kidd Gomez took his seventh career open tournament championship Saturday.
MARSHALL, Mo. – Oklahoma City University placed second in the Missouri Valley Invitational as Kidd Gomez won the 125-pound division Saturday at the Burns Athletic Complex.
Mark Meyer at 157 and Mitchell Eichenauer at 184 finished as runners-up at their respective weights as nine Stars placed in the open tournament.
Maryville (Mo.) finished first, while Grand View (Iowa), ranked No. 1 in NAIA wrestling, and 12th-ranked Baker (Kan.) tied for third.
Zach Skates took third at 165, Cody Sivertsen, fourth at 184; Michael Brown, fourth at 197; Josh Stewart, fifth at 149; Teagan Franco, fifth at 174; and Stanley Lattimore, sixth at 285.
Gomez, a senior from Noble, Okla., went 4-0 on the day, defeated Lupe Florez of Northwestern (Iowa) 8-4 for the 125-pound tournament title. Gomez also pinned Mitchell Bradley of Central Missouri in 2:59. Gomez, ranked eighth among NAIA 125-pounders, captured his seventh career tournament crown.
Eichenauer, a senior from Lawton, Okla., fell 13-12 in the 184-pound title bout to Central Missouri's Clarence Neely. Eichenauer pinned Jahsua Marsh of Midland (Neb.) in 3:33 to advance to the championship match. Eichenauer is ranked fifth in the NAIA at 184 pounds.
Meyer, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., dropped a 4-1 decision to Joseph Moorhouse of Maryville in the 157-pound championship match. Meyer pinned Ishmael Rempson of William Penn (Iowa) in 3:50 to bring his OCU career record fall total to 66.
The Stars, ranked sixth in the NAIA, face Central Oklahoma, ranked third in NCAA Division II, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Edmond, Okla.
