Stars come up short 79-71 against Rogers State

Charlton Jones and Terry Johnson each posted 20-point performances

Terry Johnson posted a game-high 23 points against Rogers State.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell 79-71 to Rogers State Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars led by as many as nine points in the second half, but 20th-ranked Rogers State shot a blistering 72 percent from behind the 3-point line in the second frame to edge OCU. The loss moves the Stars to 8-5 overall and 1-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The teams traded buckets and the lead for much of a first half that featured nine lead changes and four ties.
At the 5:13 mark, Terry Johnson hit a 3-point jumper and Charlton Jones followed with a transition layup to spark the Stars to a 15-4 run. Johnson fueled the run with eight of his 17 first-half points to give OCU an eight-point lead with 1:15 left in the period.
Ken Holdman scored in the paint to stop the run and cut the Stars' lead to 35-29 at halftime.
OCU held Rogers State to 4-of-13 shooting from behind the 3-point line in the first half. The Stars forced four Hillcat turnovers while not committing any turnovers of their own in the period.
Johnson hit 6-of-11 from the floor to notch 17 points in the first half. Jones added 10 points before halftime.
Early 3-point buckets from Kaleb Smith and Jones helped the Stars maintain a nine-point lead at 16:29 mark of the second half.
Rogers State responded with five 3-pointers, three from Donald Williams, in four minutes to catch the Stars and take a 53-48 lead with 12:07 left on the clock.
OCU got a pair of free throws from Johnson and a jumper from Elhadji Wade to cut into the Rogers State lead and make the score 64-60 with 4:49 to go.
Rogers State went 6-for-7 from the free throw line down the stretch to put the game on ice and take the 79-71 victory.
OCU outrebounded Rogers State 41-38 on the game and outscored the Hillcats 15-6 in second-chance points. Rogers State hit 8-of-11 from 3-point distance in the second half.
Johnson led the OCU charge with 23 points, four rebounds and three assists. Jones followed with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Troynell Adams notched 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
The Stars will return to action against fourth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
