Stars fall to Wayland Baptist 70-68

OCU fought its way back from a 13-point deficit, but fell short and moves to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in SAC play

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University narrowly fell 70-68 to Wayland Baptist (Texas) Saturday at the Hutcherson Center.
The Stars, ranked No. 22 in NAIA Division I men's basketball, trailed by one point with 20 seconds remaining but missed the potential game winner from 3-point range and move to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Senior Troynell Adams led OCU with a game-high 25 points off the bench. Guard Terry Johnson followed with 22 points and six rebounds in 40 minutes of action.
OCU withstood an early 8-0 run by the Pioneers and got four straight points from Adams to make the score 8-4 with 16:37 to go in the first half.
Wayland Baptist maintained a double-digit lead while shooting 44 percent from the 3-point distance in the first half and led by as many as many as 13 in the period.
Kaleb Smith hit a 3-point jumper at the 7:05 mark to spark a 12-2 run by OCU. Charlton Jones capped the scoring with a fastbreak layup to cut the Pioneer's lead to 33-30 with 3:20 to go in the half.
Wayland Baptist responded with a 3-pointer from Tanner Hazelbaker and stretched its lead to 39-33 at the half.
OCU forced 12 turnovers in the first half, but shot just 37 percent from the floor and 20 percent from behind the 3-point line in the first 20 minutes of action.
Elhadji Wade hit three straight jumpers to start the second half and tie the score at 41-41. Adams followed with back-to-back buckets to give OCU its first lead of the game at 45-43 with 15:42 on the clock.
At the 14:07 mark, Adams took over the game and scored five straight points and notched steal to help the Stars stretch their lead to six points with 12 minute to play in the game.
OCU maintained its lead until Hazelbaker hit a 3-pointer to cap an 8-0 run and give the Pioneers a 64-62 lead with 4:49 to go.
Back-to-back jumpers from Adams and Johnson tied the game at 68-68, but Eric Milam hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give the Pioneers a one-point advantage with 20 seconds left on the clock.
After an OCU timeout, the Stars got a look from 3-point range, but Jamil Donovan's shot was too strong and the game ended 70-68 in favor of Wayland Baptist.
OCU shot 53 percent from the field in the second half and held the Pioneers to 36 percent shooting the period. The Stars outscored Wayland Baptist 27-14 in bench points and scored 22 points off turnovers in the game.
OCU will return to action against Rogers State at 8 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
