East Central nips OCU in five sets

Three Stars net 12 kills each

Hannah Mitcham posted 39 assists, three aces, two kills and five digs Tuesday for OCU.

ADA, Okla. – East Central edged Oklahoma City University 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 15-13 on Tuesday at the Kerr Center.
The Stars (3-6) rallied from a two-set deficit to force the fifth set. OCU came back from a 17-12 fourth-set deficit to keep the match going.
In the fourth, OCU reeled off six consecutive points to take an 18-17 edge. The Stars posted back-to-back aces, then Torrie Flynn's kill put OCU in front. Meghan Irwin nailed consecutive kills to bring up set point at 24-20. Irwin clinched the set by socking a kill down.
In the fifth set, Tori Leisure pounded down a kill for a 4-2 OCU advantage. East Central erased its deficit as Sarah Simpson's kill put her team ahead 5-4.
Flynn cut OCU's deficit to 13-11 with a kill. Simpson answered with a kill to seal the win for East Central.
Flynn, Irwin and Rachel Gabel topped the Stars with 12 kills each. Flynn, a junior from Edmond, Okla., added four digs and three blocks while hitting .611. Irwin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, notched four blocks, including a solo block. Gabel, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, also had an ace and a block.
Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, spearheaded OCU's offense with 39 assists, three aces, two kills and five digs. Leisure, a freshman from Haslet, Texas, contributed eight kills and two digs.
Maggie Vickers led OCU with 16 digs, while Danielle Robison chipped in 14 digs and two aces.
The Stars meet Southwestern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Weatherford, Okla.
