OBU keeps Stars at bay

OCU pushes 11th-ranked OBU in four-set match

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Baptist knocked off upset-minded Oklahoma City University 25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19 on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Meghan Irwin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, topped OCU with 13 kills while netting three blocks. The Stars went to 8-10, 1-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Oklahoma Baptist, ranked 11th in NAIA volleyball, improved to 14-3, 1-0 SAC.
Torrie Flynn, a junior from Edmond, Okla., added 11 kills and six blocks, while Rachel Gabel, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, posted 11 kills, nine digs and two blocks for the Stars. Tori Leisure, a freshman from Haslet, Texas, had nine kills and two digs for OCU.
OCU's Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, racked up 43 assists and 10 digs, while Danielle Robison, a junior from Dallas, collected 25 digs. Anna Gentry contributed 11 digs, and Heather Watson provided OCU 10 digs.
OCU overcame OBU's 20-18 edge, winning the last five points of the third set. Mitcham's dump-off kill sparked OCU's 5-0 closing run. Flynn and Gabel teamed on consecutive blocks to finish the set.
In the fourth, Irwin nailed a kill to put the Stars ahead 7-4. Leisure hammered a kill to give OCU a 10-9 edge, but OBU answered with the next four points capped by a block from Sabra Clark and Tarah Derden.
Down 19-9 in the second set, OCU responded with a 5-0 run and three consecutive points. The Stars cut their deficit to 19-14 using two Irwin kills. Flynn's ace, then kills by Aspen Healy and Gabel cut the Stars' deficit to 23-20.
The Stars meet MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) at 3 p.m. Friday in Olathe, Kan., in the MidAmerica Nazarene Invitational.
