Stars split matches Saturday

Texas Wesleyan halts OCU's win streak at five

Meghan Irwin posted 33 kills and six blocks Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Texas Wesleyan snapped Oklahoma City University's five-match winning streak with a 25-22, 16-25, 25-21, 23-25, 17-15 victory Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars' string had been their finest since a seven-match win streak from Sept. 14-21, 2010 and best under coach Nikki Dieball. OCU went to 8-9 after also knocking off McPherson (Kan.) 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 earlier Saturday.
OCU put together its two highest team block totals this season. The Stars notched 12 blocks against Texas Wesleyan after reaching 10 vs. McPherson.
In the fifth set against Texas Wesleyan, OCU rallied from a 7-3 deficit to take an 8-7 edge. Torrie Flynn started OCU's splurge with a kill, while Tori Leisure pounded back-to-back kills to tie the set 7-7.
Meghan Irwin hammered a kill to help OCU even the set 12-12 after falling behind 12-10. Maggie Vickers' kill gave OCU a 14-13 advantage, and Irwin provided her team a 15-14 lead with a kill.
Texas Wesleyan came up with the final three points of the match. Katie Rosenbusch and Brittney Bryant teamed on the block that gave Texas Wesleyan the win.
OCU forced the fifth set as the Stars took a 7-2 advantage on Aspen Healy's kill. OCU erased a 21-18 deficit, seizing the lead as Flynn and Irwin combined on consecutive blocks. Irwin posted back-to-back kills to bring up set point at 24-22, then nailed the clinching kill.
Irwin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, recorded 19 kills, five digs and four blocks for OCU. Rachel Gabel, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, contributed 12 kills, four digs and two blocks, while Tori Leisure, a freshman from Haslet, Texas, provided the Stars 12 kills and six blocks.
Flynn, a junior from Edmond, Okla., added 11 kills and four blocks, while Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, collected 48 assists, 17 digs and two blocks. Danielle Robison, a junior from Dallas, led OCU with 18 digs and two aces, and Heather Watson, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., had 10 digs.
Against McPherson, Irwin amassed 14 kills and two blocks, and Leisure chipped in 10 kills and two blocks. Mitcham accumulated 38 assists and seven digs, and Robison picked up 17 digs.
Flynn racked up nine kills and three blocks, while Gabel had eight kills, six digs and three blocks. Healy topped OCU with five blocks.
In the third set, the Stars overcame a 14-11 deficit as Irwin nailed two kills and teamed with Flynn on a block. OCU kept the lead for good following that span to finish off a two-match sweep of the season series from McPherson.
OCU meets Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
