Stars pound St. Gregory's

OCU picks up first league win of 2012

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University notched its first Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball victory of the season 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15 over St. Gregory's on Tuesday at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse.
Meghan Irwin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, topped the Stars with 18 kills. OCU increased its record to 7-8, 1-0 in the SAC.
Tori Leisure, a freshman from Haslet, Texas, posted 12 kills and four blocks, while Aspen Healy, a junior from Oklahoma City, added 10 kills and three digs for the Stars. Torrie Flynn, a junior from Edmond, Okla., pounded nine kills, and Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, amassed 43 assists, 15 digs and three kills for OCU.
The Stars' Danielle Robison, a junior from Dallas, produced 18 digs and six assists, and Heather Watson, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., had 16 digs and two assists. Anna Gentry, a junior from Stillwater, Okla., and Maggie Vickers, a freshman from Carrollton, Texas, chipped in 14 digs each.
OCU took the second set by reeling off five consecutive points. Flynn hammered a kill to break an 18-18 tie. Healy followed with a kill, and Leisure nailed back-to-back kills to put OCU ahead 23-18. Leisure added a kill to put away the set.
The Stars pulled away with three consecutive points in the third set. Rachel Gabel socked a kill to put OCU ahead 10-9. Leisure had a kill to give the Stars a 12-9 lead.
Also in the third, OCU had a 5-0 run. Flynn's kill provided OCU a 16-12 advantage. Irwin added a kill, then Flynn had another kill. Healy's kill capped the OCU spree and put the Stars in front 20-12. Healy had another kill to create a 22-13 lead. Gabel posted back-to-back kills to finish off the OCU win.
OCU faces McPherson (Kan.) at 11 a.m., then Texas Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
