OCU socks Southwestern Assemblies in opening win

Stars go 1-1 to begin year

Torrie Flynn pounded 12 kills, including the clinching one, in OCU's season-opening victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University notched a season-opening 25-16, 14-25, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Friday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Oklahoma City volleyball classic.
The Stars dropped their second match of the day, falling 25-14, 25-8, 25-15 to MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), ranked 15th in the NAIA.
Against Southwestern Assemblies, Rachel Gabel collected 14 kills and two blocks in her Stars debut. Torrie Flynn knocked down 12 kills to go with two blocks, while Tori Leisure posted 10 kills and three blocks for OCU.
Hannah Mitcham accumulated 35 assists, four digs and two blocks, and Anna Gentry picked up 12 digs for OCU.
The Stars took control of the first set with seven unanswered points to go up 20-13. Gabel hammered down two kills during that stretch. Leisure pocketed two aces to close out the set.
OCU seized the third set with a 5-0 run to seal the frame. Flynn and Gabel nailed kills, while Danielle Robison pounded out an ace.
Flynn staked OCU to a 6-1 early advantage in the final set. Flynn's kill clinched the victory.
OCU recorded six aces against Southwestern Assemblies. Leisure and Robison recorded a pair each, while Mitcham and Maggie Vickers each bagged aces.
Against MidAmerica Nazarene, Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, racked up 17 assists and five digs. Gabel, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, led OCU with seven kills, while Robison, a junior from Dallas, had nine digs. Aspen Healy, a junior from Oklahoma City, amassed four blocks.
OCU takes on Tabor (Kan.) at 11 a.m., then College of the Ozarks (Mo.) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the OCU Classic.
