Caven of OCU set to coach Team USA

Caven took Stars to top of team points in USA Collegiate Sprint Championships

Shaun Caven enters his third year as OCU canoe/kayak coach.
LONDON – Oklahoma City University canoe/kayak coach Shaun Caven will help guide the United States in the London Olympics as sprint team manager/coach.
Caven has been the Stars' coach for two years. Caven also serves as OKC National High Performance Center head coach.
Along with U.S. Olympic sprint team coach Stein Jorgensen, Caven will help the United States seek its first Olympic medal in canoe/kayak since Rebecca Giddens captured silver in the slalom women's single kayak in 2004. Greg Barton won the United States' last sprint kayak medal, a bronze in the men's 1,000-meter sprint single kayak in 1992.
In 2008, Caven led the British Olympic canoe/kayak team, highlighted by gold medalist kayaker Tim Brabants. A Castle Douglass, Scotland, native, Caven also guided the Scottish national team from 1997-2001 and the British junior team from 2001-05. Caven directed Team USA in the 2009 World Championships.
With OCU, Caven seeks to produce the United States' next generation of international canoe/kayak competitors. The Stars won the overall team points standings in the 2012 USA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Sprint National Championships on the Oklahoma River on May 12-13. OCU had the top male and female award winners in Cedric Bond and Kaitlyn McElroy. Bond won the honor for the second year in a row.
Caven orchestrated OCU's team runner-up finish in the 2011 USA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Sprint National Championships in Gainesville, Ga. Bond swept the men's 200-meter, 500 and 5,000 open single races and teamed with Jared MacArthur to take the 200 and 500 doubles races. OCU's Jen Burke captured the women's 500 and 5K and the 200 and 500 doubles events along with teammate Katy Hill
The Olympic canoe/kayak events start with the whitewater men's canoe and kayak heats Sunday. The events conclude with the flatwater finals Aug. 11. For the complete Olympic canoe/kayak schedule, click here.
