GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Oklahoma City University's Cedric Bond and Jen Burke took the overall top male and female athlete awards in the USA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Sprint National Championships on Saturday at Lake Lanier.
Bond, a freshman from Tacoma, Wash., swept the three men's open events and teamed with Jared MacArthur to win the double races. Burke, a junior from San Diego, picked up two gold medals and a silver in the individual races and gold in the two doubles races.
OCU finished second in the overall team standings with 124 points. Georgia Tech won the team title with 137 points.
In the 5,000-meter men's open single race, Bond turned in a time of 23 minutes, 13.6 seconds to finish 2.1 seconds ahead of MacArthur. Will Roszel won bronze in the single, while the two placers represented OCU – Austin Schwin and Kyle Machini. Bond captured the 500 men's open single with a 2:01.9. MacArthur took second, while Schwin and Roszel finished next. In the 200 men's open single, Bond crossed the finish in 47.6 seconds, followed by MacArthur, Roszel and Schwin.
Bond and MacArthur captured the 500 men's open double race with a 1:50.9, and Roszel and Schwin took second with a 1:52.2. Bond and MacArthur also won the 200 men's open double by clocking a 41.8. Roszel and Schwin finished second.
The Stars won the 500 men's open four by completing the race in 1:44.5. OCU also took the 200 men's open four.
In the 5K women's single, Burke finished in 23:16.7, winning by 1:20.7. Burke won the 500 women's single by finishing in 2:10.9. Emily Vinson of North Georgia edged Burke for the 200 women's open single championship by 2.7 seconds.
Burke and Katy Hill paddled to the 500 women's open double title with a 2:17.8. Burke and Hill won the 200 women's double by finishing in 53.5 seconds.
The 2012 USA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Spring National Championships will be held on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City.
