LaVelle posts record numbers in 6-1 OCU win over Webber International

LaVelle breaks NAIA single-season strikeout, career appearances marks

Jamie Rateliff nailed a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning Friday.
GULF SHORES, Ala. – Lily LaVelle of Oklahoma City University broke the NAIA single-season strikeout and career appearances records, fanning 11 in a 6-1 victory over Webber International (Fla.) on Friday at Gulf Shores Sportsplex in NAIA softball championships pool play.
LaVelle, a senior from Bridge Creek, Okla., increased her season total to 477, surpassing the 473 Sharon Bell of St. Gregory's had in 2007. Third-ranked OCU squares off with 14th-ranked Williams Baptist (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Saturday on the final day of pool play.
LaVelle's 162nd appearance topped the 161 Candice Thomas made for California Baptist from 2004-07.
In the fifth inning, the Stars erased a 1-1 tie with 23rd-ranked Webber International. LaVelle scored the go-ahead run on Kiana Levy's wild pitch with the bases loaded.
Magean De La Torre drew a walk to fill the bases for Jamie Rateliff. Rateliff smoked a bases-clearing double to left-center field to put OCU ahead 5-1.
Danielle Fox socked an RBI single to left to provide the Stars a 6-1 advantage in the seventh.
LeeAnn Lopez singled past second baseman Maureen Sandidge to drive in OCU's first run Friday. The Stars went up 1-0 in the third.
De La Torre, a junior from Plano, Texas, went 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Lopez, a junior from Grand Prairie, Texas, went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in a run. Fox, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and LaVelle went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Rateliff, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., had three RBIs.
LaVelle (38-3) allowed one unearned run on four hits and three walks in seven innings. She increased her NAIA career record strikeout total to 1,348. LaVelle also added to OCU career marks in wins (117) and innings pitched (864.2).
OCU notched its 105th victory in NAIA softball championships play to increase its record number. OCU has captured NAIA softball titles in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2007.
