OCU at Wayland Baptist men's basketball preview

Mark Anderson scored five points in 10 minutes to record season highs in both categories Saturday.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University begins a two-game roadswing into Texas by facing Wayland Baptist (Texas).
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU won 72-58 over St. Gregory's on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (10-10, 7-9 SAC) shot a season-best 63.3 percent from the field (31-for-49).
Charlton Jones, a 6-foot-1 junior from Katy, Texas, turned in his first double-double for OCU with 19 points, three rebounds, 12 assists and two steals against two turnovers. Jones posts 12.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.55 steals per game.
Troynell Adams, a 6-4 junior from Chicago, provided the Stars with 13 points, two rebounds and two assists Saturday. Adams averages 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds. Orlan Jackman, a 6-6 senior from London, added 12 points and six rebounds while hitting 6 of his 10 shots from the floor. Jackman leads OCU with 13.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 0.70 blocked shots a game. His rebounding ranks third in the SAC and 32nd nationally.

The Stars are unranked in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU are ninth in the league standings after being predicted to finish seventh in the SAC in the preseason.
OCU leads the overall series against Wayland Baptist 36-10. The Stars edged Wayland Baptist 74-72 on Jan. 14 at Abe Lemons Arena. Jackman and Tim Morton hit free throws for OCU in the final 1:19 to provide the winning points.
 
ABOUT THE PIONEERS: Northwestern Oklahoma State rallied past Wayland Baptist 87-83 on Saturday in Alva, Okla. Wayland Baptist (10-13, 4-11 SAC) led 64-63 before Jeremy Felton's free throws with 9:00 left gave Northwestern the lead for good.
T.J. Jacobs, a 6-2 junior, produced 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jacobs tallies 12.8 points and 4.2 assists a game. Jamie Eisinger, a 5-11 senior, had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists. He averages 8.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
SAC coaches expected Wayland Baptist to end up 11th in the conference.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps is in the midst of his first season as a head coach with OCU. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 22-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Matt Garnett took over as Wayland Baptist coach after leading McMurry (Texas) to a 21-7 finish and the American Southwest Conference Tournament title last season. Garnett became an all-American playing for Wayland Baptist.
