OCU pops St. Gregory's 72-58

Troynell Adams scored 13 points while sinking 6 of his 7 shots from the field Saturday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University posted a 72-58 win over St. Gregory's on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Charlton Jones, a junior from Katy, Texas, spearheaded OCU with 19 points, 12 assists and two steals. The Stars halted a five-game losing streak, moving to 10-10, 7-9 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Jones dished out his season high with 12 assists while recording two turnovers. Troynell Adams, a junior from Chicago, chipped in 13 points and four rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting from the field for OCU. Orlan Jackman, a senior from London, produced 12 points and six rebounds for the Stars.
OCU sank a season-high 63.3 percent from the floor, hitting 31 of 49 shots as a team.
“I'm proud of our kids,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “Every day we practice, and we practice hard. Every day we walk out, we want to prepare to win a championship. We don't stop.”
Shane Rogers led the Stars with seven rebounds as OCU had a 30-20 rebounding advantage. The Stars overcame committing 20 turnovers.
“We said at the beginning of the year, we talked about the evaluation of our character,” Phelps said. “It's when you have adversity is when you find out how you are as a human being. In this league, no one will feel sorry for you. This program has a lot of tradition. Those that came before us, we have to fight for them.”
Fayzon Richey led St. Gregory's with 20 points, while 6-foot-6, 340-pound Ronnie Hishaw added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. St. Gregory's hit 41.2 percent of its shots from the floor, 34.6 percent in the first half.
“St. Gregory's is a hard team to prepare for,” Phelps said. “Fayzon Richey can really score. You don't know when he will have 12 points in a row. That big man, God, is he a load inside. I tried to tell our guys to stop letting him get to the basket. They said, 'Coach, you have no idea how strong he is.' I have a lot of respect for St. Gregory's and the job their coaches do.”
OCU reeled off an 11-2 run to build an early 17-8 advantage. Adams knocked in a layup to ignite the OCU run with 16:06 left in the first. Jones scored on back-to-back lay-ins before Adams had another bucket. Cory Nicholson put the Stars ahead 17-8 with a layup with 11:15 to go in the first period.
Adams' fastbreak lay-in provided the Stars with their biggest lead of the game. OCU went up 69-50 with 3:56 showing on the clock.
OCU meets Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 8 p.m. Thursday in Plainview, Texas.
