OCU vs. Oklahoma Baptist men's basketball preview

Elhadji Wade chips in 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds a game while shooting 52.5 percent from the field.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University enters its regular-season finale and senior day against top-ranked Oklahoma Baptist seeking to get into the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: St. Gregory's dealt OCU a 77-61 defeat Wednesday in Shawnee, Okla. The Stars (12-13, 9-12 SAC) posted a 32.2 percent shooting percentage from the field (19-for-59), including 25.9 percent in the first half.
Troynell Adams, a 6-foot-4 junior from Chicago, scored a season-high 21 points to go with four rebounds and two steals. Adams has put together 8.6 points and 3.2 rebounds a game this season. He has averaged 13.1 points a game the past seven contests.
Charlton Jones, a 6-1 junior from Katy, Texas, produced 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in 40 minutes of work. Jones provides OCU with 12.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.60 steals per game. Shane Rogers, a 6-4 senior from Flower Mound, Texas, contributed 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Rogers averages 8.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.17 steals.

The Stars are unranked in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU are eighth in the league standings after being predicted to finish seventh in the SAC in the preseason.
OCU owns a 61-50 lead in the all-time series against Oklahoma Baptist. The Stars fell 76-61 on Feb. 2 in Shawnee, Okla. Rogers had a career-high 17 points as OCU led for much of the game until 15:20 left in the contest.
 
ABOUT THE BISON: Oklahoma Baptist won 83-72 over Mid-America Christian on Thursday in Shawnee, Okla. No. 1-ranked OBU (25-3, 18-3 SAC) sank 54.5 percent of its shots from the floor.
Emmanuel Wilson, a 6-4 senior, picked up 18 points and five rebounds. Wilson spurs OBU with 17.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.32 steals a game. Derick Echols, a 6-5 senior, had 16 points and 12 rebounds. He averages 9.3 points and 6.5 rebounds a contest.
SAC coaches placed Oklahoma Baptist as the preseason favorite to win the conference.

POSTSEASON IMPLICATIONS: OCU needs a win or a Northwestern Oklahoma State loss to advance to the SAC Tournament on March 1-3 in Siloam Springs, Ark. Northwestern currently has the tiebreaker over OCU by virtue of a win over Oklahoma Baptist.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps is in the midst of his first season as a head coach with OCU. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 22-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Doug Tolin has guided Oklahoma Baptist to a 330-84 record and the 2010 NAIA title in his 12th season. Tolin's overall coaching record stands at 650-310 in 34 years as a head coach.
