OCU at St. Gregory's men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University travels to Shawnee, Okla., for the final road game of the regular season against Sooner Athletic Conference opponent St. Gregory's.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU came up short in its bid to upset No. 13 John Brown (Ark.) 71-68 Saturday at Bill George Arena in Siloam Springs, Ark. The loss dropped the Stars to 12-12 overall and 9-11 in SAC play. OCU has now played in 13 games decided by five points or less.
Guard Troynell Adams led the charge for the Stars with 14 points and five rebounds. The junior from Chicago shot 71 percent from the floor against John Brown. Adams averages 8.1 points per game and has scored in double figures in five of the last six games.
Junior Charlton Jones added 13 points, six assists and two steals in 40 minutes of action. The point guard from Katy, Texas, averages 12.1 points per game and leads the Stars in assists, passing out 5.7 per game.
Cory Nicholson, of Harrah, Okla., chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds off the bench. The 6-foot-7 forward hit 5-of-6 from the floor to tie his season high of 10 points. Nicholson also scored 10 against St. Thomas (Texas) and Southern Nazarene.
Jones' 5.7 assists per game has him ranked 11th in NAIA Division I in assists per game. Leading scorer and rebounder Orlan Jackman currently sits 24th in offensive rebounds per game with 3.2. To see how the Stars stack up statistically with the rest of the NAIA, click here.
The Stars were unranked in the latest NAIA Division I poll. OCU currently sits in the eighth spot in the SAC standings and were picked to finish seventh in the preseason.
OCU holds a 32-0 all-time record against St. Gregory's. In their last meeting the Stars took down the Cavaliers 72-58 at Abe Lemons Arena on Feb. 4.
 
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: St. Gregory's picked up an 85-63 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) Saturday at W.P. Wood Field House. The win moved the Cavaliers to 6-20 overall and 3-17 in SAC play.
Guard Fayzon Richey led the way with 32 points and six steals. Richey averages 20.3 points per outing and is 14th in the nation in points per game.
6-foot-6 Ronnie Hishaw provided 18 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Hishaw averages 10.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest.
St. Gregory's is currently in 12th place in the SAC standings and were picked to finish 12th in the preseason.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps is in the midst of his first season as a head coach with OCU. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 22-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
John Martin is in his fourth season as head coach of the Cavaliers with a 20-87 overall record since taking the helm. Martin played college basketball at St. Gregory's, when it was a junior college, and OCU.
