Stars knock off Northwood 68-58

OCU notches fourth consecutive away win

Charlton Jones reached double figures in scoring for the fifth time this season.

CEDAR HILL, Texas – Oklahoma City University dispatched of Northwood (Texas) 68-58 on Thursday at the Nutting Arena Building.
Charlton Jones, a senior from Katy, Texas, led the Stars (7-1) with 17 points in completing a two-game season series sweep of Northwood. OCU, ranked 22nd in NAIA Division I men's basketball, had its final tuneup before league play. OCU meets John Brown (Ark.) at 8 p.m. Jan. 3 in Siloam Springs, Ark., in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener.
Terry Johnson, a junior from Chicago, produced 16 points, while Elhadji Wade, a senior from Dakar, Senegal, posted 12 points for OCU. Kaleb Smith, a junior from Choctaw, Okla., chipped in 10 points in the first start of his Stars career. Smith had played 56 games coming off the bench for OCU.
Johnson's free throws built the Stars' advantage to 48-32 with 15:17 left in the game.
Northwood outscored OCU 15-4 over the next 8:15 off the game clock. Mike Fisher hit a jumper that cut the Stars' lead to 52-47 at the 7:02 mark.
Jordan Johnson sank two free throws to slice Northwood's deficit to 57-52 with 2:36 remaining in the game. Wade answered with a turnaround jumper with 1:48 showing. Johnson added a putback for a 61-51 margin at 1:10 left.
The Stars dropped in 7 of 8 free throws during the final 59 seconds to salt away the win. Tim Morton hit three free throws, while Johnson and Jones connected on a pair each in the final minute.
OCU has been picked to finish fifth place in the conference this season. OCU has won or shared 12 SAC regular-season crowns and owns eight SAC Tournament titles. The league tournament will be held Feb. 27-March 2 at the Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla.
