Stars pound Waldorf 35-10

OCU finishes 1-3 in Wartburg Desert Duals

LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma City University routed Waldorf (Iowa) 35-10, but fell to top-five nationally-ranked teams Grand View (Iowa) 27-15, Great Falls (Mont.) 33-6 and Wartburg (Iowa) 30-9 on Sunday in the Desert Duals at the Flamingo Hotel Ballroom.
Defending NAIA wrestling champion Grand View held the No. 1 ranking, while Great Falls stood third. Defending NCAA Division III champ Wartburg stands atop its national rankings. OCU (4-4) entered the duals 14th in the NAIA rankings.
Against Grand View, Kidd Gomez and Mark Meyer posted falls for the Stars. Meyer upended the top-ranked 157-pounder in the NAIA, Chad Lowman, with a pin in 6:36. Meyer, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., is ranked seventh nationally at his weight. Mitchell Eichenauer's 8-2 win over Christian Mays at 184 pounds cut OCU's deficit to 20-15.
Against Waldorf, OCU notched three falls. Meyer added to his OCU record with his 61st career pin. Meyer stuck Bryce Robbins in a fall in 1:30. Gomez and Josh Stewart also won in pins, and Zach Skates took a technical-fall win at 165.
Against Wartburg, Skates and Stanley Lattimore recorded OCU's wins. Skates' 11-4 triumph over Landon Williams drew the Stars within 13-8 before the tournament host won the next three bouts. Williams is the No. 1-ranked 165-pounder in NCAA Division III.
Against Great Falls, Michael Brown and Espitia accounted for the Stars' victories. Brown, a sophomore from Noble, Okla., won 9-2 over Dylan Lemery in the 197-pound match. Brown is ranked fifth at 197 in the NAIA, while Lemery is ranked 13th.
Shawn Lau edged Skates 3-2 in a matchup of 165-pounders ranked in the top five among the NAIA. Skates, a redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., has the No. 3 rating, while Lau is ranked fifth.
The Stars compete in the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 12-13 in Springfield, Ill. OCU came away with its finest finish in the event ever with a fourth-place showing in 2012 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.
