Brown, Skates of Stars make Bob Smith Open finals

Meyer adds to his OCU career falls mark

Zach Skates held the No. 3 spot among NAIA 165-pounders in the Nov. 21 rankings.
HAYS, Kan. – Michael Brown and Zach Skates of Oklahoma City University posted runner-up finishes in the Fort Hays State-Bob Smith Open on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Brown, a sophomore from Noble, Okla., finished as a tournament finalist for the fourth time as a Star, while Skates, a redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., made the finals for the third time in three tournaments this season.
Kolton Kersten of Midland (Neb.) edged Brown 5-4 for the 197-pound championship. Kersten stands third, while Brown is sixth in the NAIA 197-pound ratings. Brown finished 4-1 on the day and racked up two major-decision wins.
Tyler Mergen of Air Force knocked off Skates 3-1 to take the 165-pound title. Skates sits third in the 165-pound NAIA rankings. Skates nudged past Brent Havlik of Wyoming 3-2 to advance to the championship final. Skates went 4-1 in the tournament.
Mark Meyer added to his OCU career record number of falls. Meyer, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., pinned two opponents Saturday to put him at 58 during his OCU career. Meyer finished off Brandon Lloyd in 3:43, then notched the fall over Joseph Winkler in 1:28 on the consolation bracket.
Kidd Gomez of OCU picked up two falls, but ended his tournament in the consolation semifinals.
The Stars, ranked 16th in NAIA wrestling, host Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
