OCU at Southwestern Adventist men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University continues its non-conference schedule with a trip to Keene, Texas, to take on Southwestern Adventist (Texas).
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU, now 1-1 overall, suffered its first set back of the season Thursday against Central Oklahoma. The Stars fell 81-77 to the Bronchos at Abe Lemons Arena.
Guard Terry Johnson led the Stars with 18 points and five assists. The junior from Chicago shot 50 percent from the floor and posted four steals on the night. Johnson is ranked 25th in NAIA Division I in steals per game (3).
Forward Shawn Grant pitched in with 15 points off the bench. The senior from San Jose, Calif., hit five 3-pointers to help the Stars down the stretch. Grant went 5-for-8 from the behind the 3-point line in 16 minutes of action.
Senior Charlton Jones, of Katy, Texas, added 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists against Central Oklahoma. The 6-foot-1 point guard leads the team in points (15) and assists (9) per game so far this season. Jones leads the nation in assist/turnover ratio (9).
The Stars rank No. 2 in NAIA Division I in offensive rebounds per game (19.5) and No. 5 in free-throw percentage (0.79).
OCU received votes in the NAIA Division I men's basketball coaches' preseason top-25 poll. OCU was picked to finish fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll.
 
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS: Southwestern Adventist enters the contest with a 1-2 record. The Knights picked up a 103-100 victory in their season opener against Mountain View (Texas) before falling 75-70 to Cedar Valley (Texas) and 90-66 to Brookhaven (Texas).
The Stars took on Southwestern Adventist a season ago and downed the Knights 72-28. 6-foot-8 center Terry Eichelberg led the Knights with seven points and three rebounds.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps enters his second season as OCU coach. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 23-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
SWAU is coached by Francis Nicholas, assisted by William Iverson, Daniel Leach and Melissa Muñoz.
