OCU vs. Southwestern Adventist men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University continues its non-conference schedule with a rematch against Southwestern Adventist (Texas).
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. OCU students, faculty and staff get in free to all Stars regular-season home events with their university ID.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars took down Langston 75-70 on Nov. 20 at C.F. Gayles Gymnasium to move to 4-1 on the season. OCU's Troynell Adams led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. The senior guard logged 34 minutes against the Lions and is third on the team in minutes played with 140. Adams leads the Stars in scoring with 14.8 points per outing.
Junior Ivan Matip pitched in with 16 points and six boards against Langston. The 6-foot-3 guard went 5-for-7 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line on the game. Matip is ranked ninth in NAIA Division I in offensive rebounds per game (3.6) and 10th in free throw percentage (0.88).
Forward Shawn Grant added 13 points off the bench. The senior from San Jose, Calif., shot 71 percent from the floor and grabbed two rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Grant is OCU's leading 3-point shooter, shooting 42 percent from behind the 3-point line.
The Stars are ranked fourth in NAIA Division I in free throw percentage (0.76), sixth in total rebounds per game (42.8) and seventh in defensive rebounds per game (29.4) and total rebound margin (10.4). To see how OCU stacks up against the rest of the NAIA, click here.
OCU received votes in the NAIA Division I men's basketball coaches' preseason top-25 poll. OCU was picked to finish fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll.
 
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS: The Knights enter the contest with a record of 1-9 on the season. Southwestern Adventist fell to OCU 79-68 on Nov. 10. Chris Franklin led the Knights with a game-high 22 points and eight rebounds. Kevin Squarzon pitched in with 15 points and six assists and Jeff Sickler added 11 points on 60 percent shooting from 3-point distance.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps enters his second season as OCU coach. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 23-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
SWAU is coached by Francis Nicholas, assisted by William Iverson, Daniel Leach and Melissa Muñoz.
