OCU downs Champion Baptist 79-62

Ivan Matip pulled down 20 rebounds and scored 16 points in his OCU debut

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dropped Champion Baptist (Ark.) 79-62 in its season opener Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
 The Stars got double-doubles from senior Charlton Jones and junior-transfer Ivan Matip and picked up their first win of the season.
OCU opened the game on a 17-3 run. Jones got the scoring started with a bucket in the paint, and 3-pointers from Troynell Adams and Matip and a pair of layups from Terrence Walker gave OCU a 12-1 lead with just under 17 minutes to play in the first half.
Jones capped the run with five straight points to give the Stars a 17-3 lead at the 14:13 mark.
Champion Baptist's Brandon Linkins scored three of his game-high 36 points at the 12:40 mark to cut OCU's lead to 11.
The Stars went to work in paint, getting four points apiece from Jones and senior Elhadji Wade to stretch the Stars lead to 29-11 with 8:34 remaining in the first half.
Freshman Jamil Donovan picked off a pass and found Walker for a dunk in transition to give the Stars their biggest lead of the half at 40-18 with four minutes to go.
Linkins hit a jumper with a less than a minute to play to cut the OCU lead to 46-30 at halftime.
The Stars shot 46 percent from the floor and held the Tigers to 37 percent shooting in the first half.
After Champion Baptist cut the OCU lead to eight, Adams and junior Terry Johnson hit back-to-back jumpers to push the Stars' lead to 57-44 at the 13:38 mark of the second half.
A pair of free throws and a fast-break layup from Walker and jumper from Matip gave OCU an 18 point lead with less than five minutes to play.
Linkins cut the OCU lead to 73-62 with six straight points, but the Stars closed the game on a 6-0 run punctuated by a fast-break dunk by Adams to give OCU the 79-62 victory.
The Stars outscored Champion Baptist 42-20 in the paint and scored 25 points off 18 turnovers on the game.
Matip led the way with 16 points and a game high 20 rebounds. Jones followed with 15 points and 12 assists and Adams, Johnson and Walker all added 12 points.
The Stars will return to action against Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
