OCU nips Langston 75-70

Stars move to 3-0 on road

Troynell Adams recorded 16 points and seven rebounds Tuesday.

LANGSTON, Okla. – Oklahoma City University came away with a 75-70 victory over Langston on Tuesday at C. Felton Gayles Gymnasium.
Troynell Adams and Ivan Matip each produced 16 points to top the Stars. OCU improved to 4-1 on the season.
OCU stretched its lead to its biggest of the game at 70-61 with 1:04 remaining. The Stars reeled off a 7-0 run as Adams tallied five points.
Ed Brown of Langston sank two free throws to cut OCU's lead to 63-61 at the 2:40 mark. Jamil Donovan followed by sinking a pair of free throws for the Stars.
Adams scored twice around the basket as Donovan set him up on a layup, then Terry Johnson fed Adams, who nailed a lay-in and drew a foul with 1:04 left. Adams finished the 3-point play to push OCU's cushion to 70-61.
Langston's Dylan Murrell drained a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute. Murrell's second trey sliced OCU's advantage to 73-70 at 16 seconds to go.
On the Stars' next possession, Charlton Jones canned a couple of free throws to provide OCU a five-point lead with six seconds showing. Emil Clayton missed a 3-pointer for Langston with five seconds left.  
Joey Atkinson gave Langston its last lead of the game 32-31 on a putback with 20 seconds left in the first half. Shawn Grant's layup put OCU up 33-32 at three seconds to go before halftime.
The Stars stayed just ahead of Langston in the second half using 57.9 percent shooting in the period. OCU sank 11 of 19 shots from the field in the second. The Stars finished hitting 42.9 percent from the floor while limiting Langston to 36.8 percent shooting.
Grant, a senior from San Jose, Calif., added 13 points and three 3-pointers on 5-of-7 shooting from the field for OCU. Tim Morton, a senior from Capital Heights, Md., led the Stars with 13 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Jones, a senior from Katy, Texas, dished out a team-high nine assists. Adams, a senior from Chicago, pulled down seven rebounds, and Matip, a junior from Ojai, Calif., had six rebounds while hitting 5 of 7 from the field.
The Stars host Southwestern Adventist (Texas) at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at Abe Lemons Arena.
