OCU's Brown, Gomez notch Bethany Swede Open titles

Meyer, Skates place in tournament

Kidd Gomez took his sixth career open tournament crown wrestling for OCU.
LINDSBORG, Kan. – Michael Brown and Kidd Gomez of Oklahoma City University earned titles in the Bethany Swede Open on Saturday at Smoky Valley High School.
The Stars' Zach Skates picked up a runner-up finish, while Mark Meyer took third place in the tournament.
Brown, a sophomore from Noble, Okla., won his second career tournament championship. Brown edged teammate Mitchell Eichenauer, competing unattached, 3-1 in the 197-pound final.
Gomez, a senior from Noble, Okla., posted his sixth career open tournament crown. Gomez prevailed 16-9 over Cody Tow of Northwest Kansas to capture the 125-pound title. Gomez pinned Evan Amaro from Wichita State in 3:25 among his four victories Saturday.
Skates, a redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., was pinned by Clark Glass of Oklahoma in the 165-pound championship. Skates overwhelmed Federico Rosiles of Northwest Kansas 21-6 among his four wins in the event. Skates notched two wins by major decision.
Meyer, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., knocked off Brandon Starkey of Concordia (Neb.) 7-2 in the third-place match at 157. Meyer pinned Jarred Pratt of Northwest Kansas in 6:24 and Martin Dobler of Concordia in 2:32 on Saturday.
OCU takes on Central Baptist (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Conway, Ark.
