Stars top Southwestern Adventist 79-68

OCU scored 54 points in the paint to pick up the win and move to 2-1

KEENE, Texas – Oklahoma City University held off Southwestern Adventist (Texas) 79-68 Saturday at Leiske-Pultar Gymnasium.
The Stars led by as many as 15 points in the second half and fought off a late charge by the Knights to move to 2-1 on the young season.
Southwestern Adventist's Terry Eichelberg scored in the paint to start the game and send the Knights on a 7-0 run.
OCU answered with a 16-8 run to take the lead 16-15 at the 11:06 mark of the first half. Ivan Matip and Terrence Walker led the surge with four points apiece. Walker finished the run with a transition dunk.
The teams traded baskets for much of the first half. Back-to-back layups from Matip gave the Stars their biggest lead of the half and made the score 38-32 with 3:15 reaming.
Kaleb Smith and Shawn Grant score the final two buckets of the period to give OCU a 44-40 lead at halftime.
The Stars scored 22 points off turnovers in the first half. OCU outscore Southwestern Adventist 11-5 on second-chance points in the period.
OCU opened the second half on a 14-3 run to extend the lead to 58-43 at the 15:05 mark. Tim Morton and Walker led the way as OCU scored all 14 points in paint.
After the Knights cut the OCU lead to four with just over 10 minutes to play, Walker and Morton combined for six points to stretch the Stars' lead to 67-58.
OCU shot 60 percent from the floor and outscored Southwestern Adventist 32-8 in the paint in the second half to maintain its lead and pick up the 79-68 victory.
Walker led the way with 15 points and five rebounds. Troynell Adams followed with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. Matip pitched in 14 points and Morton finished with 13 points.
OCU scored 31 points off turnovers and outscored the Knights 54-34 in the paint on the night.
The Stars will return to action against Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Hamilton Field House.
