OCU edges Southwestern

Irwin socks 16 kills as Stars avenge Sept. 5 loss to Southwestern

Meghan Irwin produced 16 kills and five digs Tuesday for the Stars.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University nudged past Southwestern Oklahoma State 27-25, 26-24, 25-23 on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Meghan Irwin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, topped the Stars with 16 kills to go with five digs. OCU improved to 13-16.
OCU avenged a 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 loss to Southwestern on Sept. 5 in Weatherford, Okla.
“I'm just really proud of how hard we're working in practice,” OCU coach Nikki Dieball said. “The girls are staying consistent and striving to get better. We're seeing good results from that hard work.”
Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, accumulated 37 assists and five digs for the Stars. Rachel Gabel, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, contributed 12 kills, eight digs and a solo block for OCU.
Aspen Healy, a junior from Oklahoma City, posted seven kills and three blocks, while Tori Leisure, a freshman from Haslet, Texas, chipped in six kills and three blocks for the Stars.
Danielle Robison, a junior from Dallas, provided OCU with 16 digs and three assists, and Anna Gentry, a junior from Stillwater, Okla., had eight digs and two kills.
OCU needed two set points to put away the first frame. Southwestern responded with two points after OCU had set point at 24-23 as Kaila Lancaster's ace put her squad up 25-24. Irwin and Gabel answered with kills to bring the Stars the first set.
In the second set, the Stars erased a 16-10 deficit with a 7-0 run. Irwin pounded down two kills, while Torrie Flynn and Mitcham added kills. Mitcham provided the go-ahead point with her kill. The Stars won the set using kills from Healy and Gentry.
OCU overcame 8-3 and 16-11 third-set holes. Irwin converted three kills in a row that put the Stars ahead 21-20. Gabel clinched the victory with a kill.
OCU meets Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas.
