Stars pull out win over Mid-America Christian

Leisure cranks out season-high 17 kills for OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University scraped past Mid-America Christian in five sets 20-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-18, 15-11 on Tuesday at the Gaulke Activity Center.
The Stars notched their third win in five-set volleyball matches this year. OCU improved to 14-21, 4-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Tori Leisure, a freshman from Haslet, Texas, spearheaded OCU with a season-high 17 kills to go with five blocks. Meghan Irwin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, posted 14 kills and four digs for the Stars.
Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, accumulated 43 assists, 14 digs and four kills, while Rachel Gabel, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, chipped in nine kills, 15 digs and two blocks for OCU.
Danielle Robison, a junior from Dallas, picked up 22 digs and two aces, and Aspen Healy, a junior from Oklahoma City, contributed eight kills and three blocks. Maggie Vickers, a freshman from Carrollton, Texas, recorded nine digs, and Heather Watson, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., provided the Stars eight digs and a team-high three aces.
Leisure put away the victory by nailing a kill at match point in the fifth set. Irwin scored four out of five points with kills to put OCU ahead 11-5. Gabel and Leisure socked kills, then Watson produced a service ace to build an early 4-1 Stars edge.
OCU forced the fifth set after seizing the lead with three consecutive points. Mitcham's kill broke a 6-6 tie, then Robison served up an ace. Torrie Flynn added a kill for a 9-6 OCU advantage. Healy's kill gave the Stars the set.
In the second set, OCU used a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. After Mid-America Christian had a service error to break a 9-9 tie, Gabel, Healy and Leisure pounded kills – Leisure hammered down two during that stretch.
The Stars complete the regular season against John Brown (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
