OCU falls to Wayland Baptist

Mitcham picks up 28 assists, seven digs for Stars

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University challenged Wayland Baptist (Texas) before bowing 26-24, 25-13, 25-21 on Friday at the Hutcherson Center.
Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, paced the Stars with 28 assists to go with seven digs and two kills. OCU went to 13-20, 3-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
Rachel Gabel topped OCU with eight kills, while Torrie Flynn added seven kills and three digs. Danielle Robison posted 10 digs and four aces, and Aspen Healy contributed six kills and two digs for the Stars.
The Stars scored the first four points of the match as Flynn recorded a kill and an ace. Robison's back-to-back aces gave OCU a 10-8 edge, and Gabel hammered a kill that put the Stars in front 17-14.
Meghan Irwin's kills created a 21-20 OCU lead then a 22-22 tie. Healy nailed a kill to extend the set, knotting the teams up at 24-24. Tania Gomez and Shahala Hawkins combined on a block to seal the set.
Flynn pounded a kill to put the Stars ahead 9-7 in the second set before Wayland Baptist rallied.
OCU meets Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
