OCU squeaks past John Brown 70-67

Jackman's block in the final seconds lifts OCU over John Brown

Charlton Jones posted 22 points and nine assists against John Brown on Saturday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University men's basketball held off 20th-ranked John Brown (Ark.) to win 70-67 Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
After point guard Charlton Jones buried a jumper in the lane to give the Stars a 69-67 advantage with seven seconds to play, senior Orlan Jackman swatted Andy Garcia's layup attempt into the hand of fellow senior Shane Rogers to seal the win for the Stars.
The 70-67 victory moved the Stars to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
“It was a really big block, and I'm really proud of that young man,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “It shows how selfless Orlan is. This wasn't one of those games where he got the kind of minutes that he's used to, but he still cheered his teammates on and came off the bench and made a big play to win the game. That is the type of effort and selflessness that we want to in our program.”
John Brown jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but OCU responded with an 11-0 run to take an 11-5 lead with 12:12 left in the first half. Jackman fueled the run with five of OCU's 11 points.
JBU's Abel Galliguez drained back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the score at 13-13, but the Stars answered with a 14-5 run sparked by six points from sophomore Tim Morton and four points from Jones to make the score 27-18 with 2:37 left to play.
Junior Elhadji Wade scored on the low block to push the Stars' lead to 12 points with 29 seconds remaining in the half, but Adrian Miller hit a jumper just before the buzzer to make the score 34-24 at halftime.
The Stars shot 50 percent from the floor and outscored John Brown 26-10 in the paint in the first half. OCU scored 11 second-chance points in the period.
The OCU defense held the Golden Eagles to 34 percent from the floor and 33 percent from behind the 3-point line in the first half.
Rogers scored seven points to get the Stars going in the second half and give OCU a 43-30 lead at the 16:11 mark.
Over the next eight minutes Miller led the Golden Eagles on a 22-4 run to give John Brown a five point lead with 8:41 remaining in the contest. Miller scored 10 points in the paint to make the score 52-47.
The teams traded buckets until Rogers buried a 3-pointer to regain the lead for the Stars at 61-58 with four minutes to play.
The Stars maintained their lead until JBU's Colson Rakestraw hit a 3-pointer with 38 second left in the game to tie the score at 67-67.
OCU ran the shot clock down to 10 seconds before Jones drove the lane and nailed the floating jumper to put the Stars up 69-67 with seven seconds remaining.
John Brown inbounded the ball quickly and found Garcia, who had his layup attempt blocked by Jackman. Rogers controlled the rebound for the Stars and was fouled with a half second left on the clock. Rogers made one of two free-throw attempts to give the Stars the 70-67 victory.
Jones led the way for OCU offensively with 22 points and nine assists. Morton added 15 points and 6 boards and Rogers posted 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. OCU shot 53 percent from the floor on the game and scored 23 points off 16 JBU turnovers.
The Stars will stay home for their second of a three-game homestand against Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 8 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
