Rogers State stuns OCU 81-79

Jackman's career-high 29 not enough as Stars upset bid falls short

Tim Morton scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds against Rogers State.
CLAREMORE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University men's basketball came up short against No. 5 Rogers State in a 81-79 thriller at the Claremore Expo Center.
Senior Orlan Jackman's 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell short as did OCU's upset bid. The Stars dropped to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The teams traded buckets for much of the first half and the score was tied at 18-18 with 11:53 to play in the half.
At the 11:30 mark junior Sam Ferguson hit a jumper to give the Stars a one-point advantage. OCU followed up by forcing a Rogers State turnover and got a two-point bucket from Jackman to spark a 15-7 run and give the Stars a 36-27 lead with 5:28 left in the half.
Rogers State cut the OCU lead to one with 2:34 to play, but the Stars answered with seven unanswered points to take a 43-35 lead to the locker room.
Jackman fueled the Stars in the first half with 22 points and five rebounds in 20 minutes of work. The forward from London shot 80 percent from the floor and 66 percent from 3-point range to lead OCU to an eight-point lead at the half.
The Stars scored eight points off 10 Rogers State turnovers while only committing two turnovers of their own.
Points off turnovers proved to be the difference in the half as Rogers State outshot the Stars, going 52 percent from the floor and 60 percent from behind the 3-point line.
A quick two points from Tim Morton and a 3-pointer from Ferguson gave the Stars their biggest lead of the game at 48-38 with 17:33 to play.
OCU held their lead for the much of the half until Rogers State's Kendrell Thompson made a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 72-71 at the 3:16 mark.
The Stars answered with a quick 7-2 run to take a 79-73 lead with 1:44 to go, but the Hillcats responded with back-to-back buckets from Thompson to cut the OCU to 79-78 with 46 second remaining.
With 23 seconds on the clock Jones drove the lane and scored, but was called for an offensive foul keeping the score 79-78.
Rogers State ran the clock down to three seconds before Alex Ewings hoisted a deep 3-pointer that bounced off the front of the rim and in to give Rogers State an 81-79 lead.
Jackman took a half-court pass from Shane Rogers but missed a 3-pointer as time expired to give Rogers State the 81-79 victory.
Jackman finished with a career-high 29 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The 6-foot-6 forward shot 76 percent from the floor and 63 percent from 3-point distance.
Morton added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Stars and Jones posted 14 points and four assists in 40 minutes of work.
OCU will return to action against John Brown (Ark.) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
