USAO knocks off OCU 77-69

Jones scores career-high 25 points for Stars

Charlton Jones set his career high with 25 points and tied his career high with four 3-pointers against USAO on Saturday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University suffered a 77-69 setback to USAO on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU's Charlton Jones, a junior from Katy, Texas, rang up a career-high 25 points. The Stars moved to 9-7, 6-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Jones also had three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Orlan Jackman, a senior from London, notched his fourth double-double in a row and sixth of the season with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Stars.
USAO paid OCU back for the Stars' 75-64 victory over the Drovers on Dec. 1 in Chickasha, Okla. Kyle Hunt led USAO with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
In the first half, USAO dropped in six of its nine 3-pointers on the night. USAO sank 51.7 percent, but finished at 46 percent from the field. USAO shot only 38.1 percent from the floor in the second half.
“I think they came in and did a good job stepping up and knocking down shots,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said of USAO. “They stepped up and knocked down 3s. They have a talented big man, and he got going early. That's the strength of their offense.”
Hunt's jumper built a 47-25 USAO advantage with 19:04 remaining in the game. OCU eventually cut its deficit to six points.
OCU committed 17 turnovers as USAO converted on those for 25 points.
“I sound like a broken record, but you can't beat yourself,” Phelps said. “They beat us. They did a good job, but we helped them.”
Jones knocked in a trey, then Kaleb Smith had a free throw and a layup as OCU used six unanswered points to cut its deficit to 59-50 at the 9:58 mark.
The Stars' 9-3 run cut the USAO advantage to 73-67 with 23 seconds remaining. Jones started the spree with free throws at 2:25 left in the game. Jackman put together a 3-point play at 1:56 to go, and Jones added lay-ins in the final minute.
Jackman's putback sliced USAO's lead to 75-69, but USAO went 6-for-10 from the free-throw line in the last minute of the game.
OCU takes on Oklahoma Christian at 8 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Backyard Brawl.
