Southern Nazarene outduels OCU 76-70

Jackman posts 27 points, 15 rebounds for Stars

Cory Nicholson helped the Stars outrebound Southern Nazarene 42-28 Thursday.
BETHANY, Okla. – Oklahoma City University came up short in a high-scoring matchup with No. 14 Southern Nazarene on Thursday, falling 76-70 at the Sawyer Center.
Despite senior Orlan Jackman's game-high 27 points, the Stars fell to 9-6 overall and 6-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Sophomore Tim Morton staked OCU to an early lead, but the Stars and Southern Nazarene traded baskets for the entire first half. Junior Troynell Adams hit a jumper with eight seconds left to give the Stars a 41-40 lead at the half.
The first half featured 10 ties and 18 lead changes, and both squads shot over 50 percent from the field.
Jackman scored 14 points and Adams had nine to lead the OCU charge. Both players pulled down four offensive rebounds to help OCU outrebound the Crimson Storm 21-13.
The offensive battle continued in the second half. Junior Charlton Jones hit a 3-pointer and Jackman followed with a pair of free throws to give the Stars their largest lead of the game at 51-47 with 14 minutes left to play.
After Southern Nazarene took a 54-53 lead at the 11:57 mark, Morton and Jackman each converted a pair of free throws to put OCU up by three with 11 minutes to go.
The lead continued to change hands until the 7:37 mark when Southern Nazarene's Jon West scored a quick four points to spark an 11-2 run and give the Crimson Storm a 73-64 lead with 3:25 left in the game.
Back-to-back jumpers from Adams and senior Shane Rogers brought OCU back within four points of the lead with 1:36 to go, but that was as close as the Stars would get. Southern Nazarene made free throws down the stretch and held on to win 76-70.
Jackman posted his fifth double-double of the season, adding 15 rebounds to his game-high 27 points. Adams finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and Morton chipped in with 10 points.
OCU ran out of gas in the second half, only shooting 24 percent from the floor and 16 percent from 3-point distance. The Stars committed 21 turnovers on the night leading to 23 Southern Nazarene points.
The Stars outrebounded Southern Nazarene 42-28 on the game.
OCU will return to the court against USAO at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
