Lubbock Christian edges OCU 62-59

Rogers tops Stars with 16 points

Orlan Jackman posted his third double-double this season, scoring 11 points and pulling down 14 rebounds Thursday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Douglas Williams' 3-pointer brought Lubbock Christian (Texas) a 62-59 victory over Oklahoma City University on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Williams knocked in the buzzer-beating game winner from the right corner off Jevvon Hunter's feed. The Stars fell to 8-5, 5-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Shane Rogers, a senior from Flower Mound, Texas, led OCU with 16 points while grabbing five rebounds. Orlan Jackman, a senior from London, notched his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Stars.
The Stars' Tim Morton, a sophomore from Capital Heights, Md., picked up 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double this season. Charlton Jones, a junior from Katy, Texas, contributed 10 points, five rebounds and nine assists.
OCU competed in its third consecutive contest decided by three points or less in the final seconds of the game.
“As you know in this game, it appears that the game is won on the final shot, but there are little things throughout the game that decide it,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “He knocked down a good 3. They deserved to win the game.”
The Stars committed 22 turnovers, which Lubbock Christian turned into 22 points.
“It's hard to win when we turn the ball over like we did tonight,” Phelps said. “Turnovers lead to baskets. It's like we always talk about, good teams don't beat themselves. We gave them opportunities, and like a good team, they took advantage of that. My hat's off to them.”
Rogers sank 7 of his 12 shots from the field while playing all 40 minutes.
“It's good to have Shane back,” Phelps said. “He's getting his confidence. He gives you everything he has. I'm glad to get the ball dropping for us, but turnovers, turnovers … ”
OCU built its largest lead of nine points twice in the game. Morton hit a layup for a 31-22 Stars lead with 2:35 remaining in the first half, and Rogers nailed a trey for a 34-25 OCU edge at the 1:23 mark of the first.
Lubbock Christian climbed back into the game, taking a 43-40 advantage on Williams' lay-in with 14:11 left in the contest. Jeff Ayisire's layup put Lubbock Christian up 57-54 with 1:46 left.
Jones answered with a layup with 1:32 left, then dished to Morton pulling up for a 17-foot jumper to give the Stars a 58-57 lead with 56 seconds to go.
Jaron Vierra's jumper gave Lubbock Christian the lead 59-58. Jones hit a free throw at 26 seconds remaining to tie the game, but missed the second free throw for Vierra to rebound and set up the final possession of the game.
The Stars meet Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
