OCU aims to repeat as WCWA champion

Stars bid for their fourth consecutive team title, fifth NWCA National Duals championship

OCU seniors Michaela Hutchison, Brittany Delgado, Kristie Davis and Tessa Plana have produced six national championships, 10 all-American nods, 294 wins and 142 falls combined in their decorated OCU careers.
Oklahoma City University brings an experienced, tough and talented women's wrestling squad into the new season.
The Stars aim to build on their championship tradition by adding a fourth consecutive Women's College Wrestling Association championship and a fifth NWCA National Duals title to their trophy case. OCU brings back nine all-Americans, two 2011 national champions and two other past national champions.
OCU begins its season with duals Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars take on the Wayland Baptist (Texas) Blue team at noon Sunday, then face Wayland Baptist at 1 p.m. OCU meets Missouri Valley's Orange team at 2 p.m., then Missouri Valley at 4 p.m. To watch the duals, click here.
“Our expectation for this season is to win the national duals and the WCWA championship,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “We return nine all-Americans and four national champions. We're loaded as far as our starting lineup goes.”
OCU's recruiting class again included the finest recruits from around the nation.
“We have four of the top recruits in the nation in the room,” Randall said. “We take everybody to the national tournament and that increases our chances of winning. It strengthens our team.”
Defending national champions Kristie Davis and Brittany Delgado highlight the team. Davis, a senior from Mustang, Okla., added WCWA 147-pound champion to her nine World medals. She went 30-1 with nine pins in 2010-11.
Delgado, a senior from Fountain Inn, S.C., will aim for her third consecutive national title. She posted a 26-1 record with 16 falls last season.
Michaela Hutchison, a senior from Soldotna, Alaska, became 121-pound runner-up after two national crowns. She went 34-9 with 19 pins along the way.
Tessa Plana, a senior from Coppell, Texas, picked up third place at 138 pounds last season, took fifth as a sophomore and won the national title as a freshman. Her record was 26-12 with 13 pins last season.
“Our seniors Michaela Hutchison, Kristie Davis and Brittany Delgado have chances to repeat at their weights,” Randall said. “Tessa's biggest competition will be her teammates.”
A weight-by-weight look at OCU:

101 pounds

Emily Webster, a freshman from Sedalia, Mo., owns the early nod after coming in as a two-time junior national champion. Brianna Rahall, a sophomore from Yorktown, Va., spent last season gaining experience behind national champion Nicole Woody.
“We have two really good 101-pound girls,” Randall said. “Brianna didn't finish the way she wanted to.”

109

Kristi Garr, a sophomore from Goodale, Mich., became a 105-pound all-American last season by finishing third place. Esthefania Jimenez, a freshman from Lubbock, Texas, and Dyonne Sedillos, a freshman from Grants, N.M., will be Garr's backups.

116

Joey Miller, a junior from Woodward, Okla., took third at 112 to become a two-time all-American. Logan Rich, a junior from Hope, Maine, and Tozhia Possemato, a freshman from Long Eddy, N.Y., provide Miller with her competition.
“She has spent her whole summer in the weight room getting stronger,” Randall said of Miller. “She's focused on wrestling without injury. Logan Rich has showed in practice that she's tougher and improved. Tozhia Possemato is young and inexperienced, but she's tough and dedicated.”

123

Kirsten Strickler, a junior from Frisco, Texas, owns a varied arsenal of moves honed after two years in OCU's room. Brieana Delgado, a freshman from Fountain Inn, S.C., is sister to Brittany Delgado and one of OCU's decorated freshman newcomers.

130

Beyond Hutchison, Audrey Morehouse, a junior from Moreno Valley, Calif., brings toughness to the mat, while Carissa Reynolds, a junior from Weaverville, Calif., will bolster OCU's depth at this weight.

136

After Plana, Beatrize Martinez, a sophomore from Fresno, Calif., picked up the most improved award at the team's preseason banquet. Amanda Hendey, a freshman from Beaumont, Calif., arrives hungry to build on her two junior national titles.

143

Past Davis, Demi Strub, a freshman from Guilford, Ind., was one of OCU's fab freshmen. Jennifer Page, a freshman from Orangevale, Calif., brings athletic ability to this weight, while Amber Rodriguez, a sophomore from Sunnyside, Wash., is physical and aggressive.

155

Brittney Roberts, a junior from Santa Fe, Texas, finished third at 147 last season to become a two-time all-American. Stephanie Geltmacher, a sophomore from Kahaluui, Hawaii, took all-American honors last season with Yakima Valley (Wash.).

170

Heather O'Connor, a freshman from Napa, Calif., was brought in to hold down this weight class.
“It's hard to find athletic girls at her weight class,” Randall said. “She's athletic and strong. She has established herself in the room.”

191

Brittany Delgado aims to become a four-time all-American.

OCU's women's wrestling team brings lofty goals into 2011-12 onto the mat.
“We think we have the possibility of winning eight of the 10 weights at the WCWA Championships,” Randall said.
